Before this month, HAGS, the just-opened, East Village–based queer fine-eating cafe, posted a photo of their lavatory on Instagram. It showed a wall of shelves lined with amber-tinted, lidded jars made up of unique flossers, Crimson Chicken peppermint butter mints, fentanyl exam strips, tampons and pads, and condoms, due to the fact as co-proprietor and chef Telly Justice claims, “it feels quintessentially queer to think of the extracurricular things to do that might occur right after dinner.” But while there was an online flurry above these offerings that set the extravagant hand soap and bottle of Purell of a typical lavatory to shame, we had been notably curious about the jars on their own.
Turns out, they’re $20 apothecary glass canisters from West Elm, sourced by architect Sarah Carpenter of Carpenter and Mason, who created the whole inside. Co-operator and beverage director Camille Lindsley specially selected the amber version — as opposed to very clear glass — for the discretion and uniformity the almost opaque tint presents. “Some of the things really do not suit as perfectly as others, like the exam strips compared to the butter mints,” Lindsley suggests. “But these necessarily mean all the things seems equivalent in a way.” Justice agrees, adding that the lids make the full screen truly feel neat and intentional.
That degree of assumed reinforces the goal of the toilet (and truly, the entire cafe): to generate an atmosphere in which each and every detail is regarded as, and in which lots of various styles of diners come to feel accommodated and cared for. “We made this exquisite, restful area that operates for every person,” Justice says. “Or as a lot of individuals as we could maybe think about.”
